It is known that most students are often faced with the conundrum of choosing a career. However, there will undoubtedly be an ideal job for everyone. It’s just a matter of following the career path that suits you.
Here are five tips to guide you to make the right career choice.
- Understand your Interests and ambitions; this would give you more clarity, think about what you enjoy doing and find it in a career. Understanding your abilities is a big step towards choosing a career. Your interests are a vital determinant of the kinds of jobs you would enjoy. A job at which you’re great but in which you are uninterested may leave you feeling unfulfilled and get you depressed. It is important to note that parents or guardians should not impose on their children or wards career paths
- Speak to experts currently in that field; before choosing a particular career, speak to people who now work in the area. Perhaps you would find it helpful if they enlighten you about the profession to understand your career path’s pro and cons. whilst I was in secondary school, the school organized a career week where different parents enlightened us on various professions, which helped speed our career decision-making process.
- Once you make a decision, identify your long and short term goals. It would help put you in your chosen field eventually. Long-term goals typically take about three to five years to reach, while you can usually fulfill a short-term goal in six months to three years. Once you have all the information you need, set your goals. An example of a long-term goal would be completing your education and training. Short-term goals include applying to training programs and internships.
- Decide which occupation is the best fit for you based on the above, then Identify the occupation in which you are most interested and one or two alternatives on which to fall back if, for any reason, you can’t pursue your first choice. Give serious thought to how you will prepare to enter your chosen career, the available schools with the course accredited, and school choice.
- Identify the core subjects you need for the course of study and excel in them to not be rejected by your school choice. It is important to note that the career planning process never ends. At various points in your career, you may seek additional training or designations that can help you continue to pursue your goals. Your career may take new turns in some cases, or you may choose to redefine yourself and your goals. Whatever phase you may be at in your career, be focused goal-oriented path.
